Martisor

Gosh !!! it is nearly " Martisor " again, always a nice time of year when we herald in the Spring. Here in Romania we give each other little Amulets, exchanging them is a gesture of love , friendship, respect and appreciation. These amulets at the beginning of the 19th century were worn around the neck or on the left hand in the belief they protected and brought you good luck for the year. People wore them from the 1st. March to the 12th March and waited for the first birds to appear in their village then they hung them in the first tree they saw in blossom. I think this is one of the nicest traditions but there are many more here.

I saw the first snowdrops yesterday, lovely a sure sign Spring is round the corner. I must say it has been a very mild winter here again , not many days that I had to wear my thermal undies!!! I am hoping my visitors (Angie and Pattie) from Oldham, near Manchester will be able to see the many little stalls on the Boulevard selling flowers and amulets for "Martisor" I am sure they will think it is a lovely tradition too.

What a lovely tradition. I envy you the snowdrops, we still have 3ft of snow here and it won't be gone till the end of April. Spring, when it comes it is really fast you can almost see the leaves on the trees grow.

Just been looking at British Columbria on comp. It really is beautiful. Were you born there and how did you meet your husband from UK?

No snowdrops here Rose but I do have crocus and the buds of daffodils in my front garden. Today it is a lovely spring day. I will send you a mental amulet for your wrist. It sounds like a lovely tradition. I am sure Angie and Patty will have a good time when they arrive. Don't forget to show them the food market as it is better than their Tommyfield one! Just kidding girls -don't beat me up I am an Owdhamer born and bred.

God bless you, Rose - I am a Romanian living in the UK - it brings tears to my eyes to see somebody from my new home appreciating the one that I left - sometimes I try to explain to my step-daughter the beauty of the simple things I used to enjoy, but I feel that the people that understand that most here are the 60 and 70 year olds... they are the few that don't take things for granted. I was looking at our baby daughter's Christmas pressies and thought, gosh, I can't believe how much she is getting. We want to get involved with a local charity that brings aid into Romania, as I want to give back some of the blessings I received and I want our aughter to grow up understanding how blessed she is to have the luck to have been born in the UK (financially, I mean). I grew up having ambitions and finding ways to fulfill them, I fin it so hard to motivate some youngsters here. I say to my hubby that the only thing that would "wake"them up would be deep, raw hunger, the kind that makes you go visit you relatives in hope that they will put a spread on for you. I knwo this is very random, but I have not had time to organise my ideas, I just let them flow. God Bless You, Rose! Think of me when you smell the neatlty planted tulips in the private gardens of Arad, this spring, please!
